7 Quick Takes {no. 31}
inspiration series, gifts that give twice, and giving glory

Wow, Friday - am I glad to see you! It's been a busy week around these parts. (I typed that sentence and wanted to delete it after writing this post earlier this week, but I'll leave it to keep things honest.)

{1}
Last week I showed you some sketches of a new series I was working on for my etsy shop. This week I am delighted to share the finished products with you! Here are some of the new pieces available:

{2}
I designed this prayer inspiration series in hopes that these pieces will jump start prayer in your life:
{prayer inspiration series}
{3}
Here are two close-up shots of a couple of my favorites from the series:
{glory be}
{bless us, o lord}
{4}
I also designed two quotation inspiration prints with quotations from two of my favorite saints:
{the things that we love}
{love is the most beautiful sentiment}
St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Gianna Beretta Molla. Gotta love them.

{5}
Speaking of St. Thomas and St. Gianna - as you may know - we named our first child, whom we lost to a miscarriage, Thomas Gianna after these two saints. You also may know about the birthday gift we are giving to the Gianna Center for Women in honor of our child. For one week only, all the proceeds from the sales of this new inspiration series will be going to the Gianna Center for Women as a part of our birthday gift fundraiser. So! If you are looking for a gift - whether it be for yourself, a birthday, a hostess gift, a baptism, (dare I mention) Christmas - you'll be giving twice when you purchase one of these prints. Thanks for visiting my shop and taking a look.

{6}
And, of course, I owe you an update on the birthday gift fundraising. Last week we had raised $715. Here's where we are this week:
Sing it with me! "Ooooooh, we're halfway there! Oooh-OH! Livin' on a prayer!" Thanks to a few generous donors we are now over halfway there. We are so grateful. Only one week left to reach our goal! We need YOU to help us get there! Thank you, as always, for your prayerful consideration.

{7}
I just want to leave you all with this beautiful song that I can't get out of my head lately. I'm sure my long-time readers will be shocked at who is singing:
To the Father, to the Son,
and to the Spirit be,
blessing, glory, honor, power,
might and majesty...
Amen. Amen, amen, amen.

a very, very special 7 quick takes {no. 27}

Happy Friday! And you know what Fridays call for - seven quick takes. {Thank you for hosting, Jen!}

{1}
Last Friday I told you I was going to the Audrey Assad concert here in NYC. Friends, it was so, so very beautiful. I cannot begin to tell you how beautiful. The Holy Spirit was working in a mighty way that night, and I am very grateful to have had the chance to be there.

{2}
If you live in or near Texas, Missouri, North Dakota, Indiana, Colorado, Alabama, Florida, Arizona or California, you should click here to see her tour schedule. It is an evening not to be missed. Truly.

{3}
I told you I was super excited to be attending the concert last weekend, but what I didn't say at the time is that I was also a little nervous. Her Fortunate Fall album is what I listened to many times while lying in bed recovering from our miscarriage earlier this year. When I hear these songs (which I love), it often brings up emotions from that challenging season of my life.

{4}
However, my prayers were answered. That evening of prayer and praise, with Audrey as our leader, was a night of healing for me. The music became fresh and new again as I lifted my voice to the Lord in song:

"You are my shepherd - there's nothing I shall want.
Beside still waters You lead my spirit on,
Your hand beside me no matter where I walk,
Through darkest valley, Your love is not far off."
{from Audrey Assad's "Lead Me On," with lyrics inspired by Psalm 23}
And:
"I put all my hope in the truth of Your promise,
and I steady my heart on the ground of Your goodness.
When I'm bowed down with sorrow, I will lift up Your name,
and the foxes in the vineyard will not steal my joy.
Because you are good to me..."
{from Audrey Assad's "Good to Me"}

So grateful for these truths, and for God's endless love.

{5}
And now, to what makes these quick takes very, very special:

We are overjoyed to (finally!) share with you...

{6}
It feels so great to finally let you in on our little secret!! It's been a bit quiet around here since the summer, but I have an inkling I'll have a lot more to say now that you're in the know. :)

{7}
St. Michael, St. Elizabeth, St. Anne, St. John Paul II, St. Gerard, St. Gianna, St. Thomas Aquinas,
St. Thomas Gianna...all you holy men and women, pray for us.

And, of course, thank YOU for your prayers!

Wishing you a beautiful autumn weekend...

7 Quick Takes {no. 26}
a birthday & a change of season

{1}
Well, it's been a while. What better way to jump back in than with a little seven quick takes action?!

{2}
Last weekend it was my birthday! I love birthdays. Do you?

My husband baked me a delicious birthday cake. Chocolate chip cake with chocolate frosting. Yum. If I may just be a proud wife for a second - you have to see this:
{3}
This beauty deserves two takes. A close-up:
Isn't it beautiful? I was so impressed. And it tasted even better than it looked, which is saying something!

{4}
When my birthday comes around, that usually means it's time for my favorite season: autumn.
God's artwork at this time of year never fails to amaze me.

 {5}
Have you subscribed to Blessed is She? The daily devotions started this month, and I am finding myself more challenged, encouraged and inspired by the word of God and these reflections. If you haven't joined us already, I'd love for you to be a part of the community!
{autumn inspired instagram I designed}

{6}
Another favorite about fall: football. If you would have told me I would ever say such a thing ten years ago I would have said you were crazy, but going to a Big Ten school can change your heart. We cheer for the Michigan Wolverines here in our house. Go blue!

For the game two weekends ago that I'd rather forget (vs. Notre Dame) I did make a pretty yummy treat that I definitely want to remember: homemade pretzels.
Here's the recipe. A little time consuming, but worth it for the delicious factor. Promise.

{7}
Tonight we are going to the Audrey Assad concert here in Brooklyn! Michael got us tickets for my birthday. I am so, so excited. If you've read this blog for very long you know I'm a big fan. Here's a little song I'm hoping she shares tonight:
Have a blessed weekend, friends!

Unfolding

Have you heard Steven Curtis Chapman's song "The Glorious Unfolding"? I know it was released several months ago, but I heard it recently and it really spoke to my heart. So much so that I wanted to share it with you today. Even if you have heard it, maybe you should take a few minutes to listen to it again. Sometimes God reveals something new to us in a song we have heard many times, so I encourage you to give it a listen if you have a chance.

"Lay your head down tonight
Take a rest from the fight
Don’t try to figure it out
Just listen to what I’m whispering to your heart

There’s so much of the story that’s still yet to unfold...
And this is going to be a glorious unfolding
Just you wait and see and you will be amazed
You’ve just got to believe the story is so far from over
So hold on to every promise God has made to us
And watch this glorious unfolding

So let us remember this life we’re living
Is just the beginning of the beginning..."

Come, Holy Spirit

Happy Pentecost, dear friends!

This is my prayer today (and every day, really). Would you pray with me?

{"Spirit of the Living God" - Audrey Assad/Henry Hallam Tweedy}

O Spirit of the Living God, thou light and fire divine,
Descend upon Thy Church once more and make it truly Thine.
Fill it with love and joy and power, with righteousness and peace;
'Til Christ shall dwell in human hearts, and sin and sorrow cease.

Blow, wind of God! With wisdom blow until our minds are free
From mists of error, clouds of doubt, which blind our eyes to Thee.
Burn, winged fire! Inspire our lips with flaming love and zeal,
To preach to all Thy great good news, God's glorious commonweal.

So shall we know the the power of Christ, who came this world to save;
So shall we rise with Him to life which soars beyond the grave;
And earth shall win true holiness, which makes Thy children whole;
'Til, perfected by Thee, we reach creation's glorious goal.

Come, Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of your people. Set us on fire for You...

7 quick takes {no. 19} in which I finish my travels
& meet Jennifer Fulwiler!

{1}
Well, my friends, it has been quite a week. Hence, the lack of blogging. In the past three weeks I've been from NYC, to Michigan, to Ohio, to Kentucky, to Ohio, to Michigan, to NYC, to Houston, and now I'm back in NYC again. Whew! I'm tired just typing it! Don't get me wrong, however - these trips have been blessed, and I am grateful!
{2}
As I mentioned last week, Michael has an internship in Houston this summer. We spent the last week settling into our apartment there and getting to know the area a bit. Now I'm back in NYC and he is in Houston. I am working on a series of shows through the middle of July and then I'll go back to Houston to join him. While I'm excited for this work opportunity, I am already missing my man!

{3}
Have you & your loved one ever had to do long distance? Luckily, Michael and I haven't had too much experience with this. Any advice out there? A friend sent me this quotation, which I just loved:

"Away with my sadness! I can always find you in the loving Heart of Jesus,
with the same clarity as if I had you present."
{St. Frances Cabrini}

{4}
I did get to enjoy a few hours of quiet, relaxation & sunshine while in Houston. I am looking forward to spending some QT at this pool when I return later in the summer. What a gift!
Sunhat & SPF 50 a must. Say what you will. {via the 'gram}

{5}
I flew back from Houston on Wednesday, just in time to meet Jennifer Fulwiler!
Let me tell you, friends: Jen is the real deal. We already know that from reading her blog, but she is just so lovely in person. She gave an awesome talk. There were moments that made me laugh, moments that made me think, and moments that touched my heart (just like her book!). Jen also did a great job answering some tough questions from the crowd (who was very engaged and seemed to thoroughly enjoy her story). The Holy Spirit is definitely at work in her. If she comes to your town any time soon, don't miss it. And if you haven't read Something Other Than God yet, you know I recommend it!
Yes, it's true: Jen is tall! And so am I! :)
Thanks for a wonderful evening, Jen! Such a delight to meet you.

{6}
I am really hoping to get back into more regular posting on the blog this week. Wish me luck! Is there anything you'd like to hear from me? Let me know!

{7}
And just for fun, "just because it's June..." (June! Juuuuuune!)
Gotta love Rodgers & Hammerstein.

Linking up with the lovely Jen & many more! Have a great weekend!

Full of Grace: A Marian Linkup

Happy Monday, and happy Memorial Day! Thank you, God, for all the men and women who have given their lives in service of our country. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them. May the peace of Christ be with all those who miss them. Amen.

•      •      •

As my dear readers know, I have been writing a post reflecting on Mary each Monday this month. This week I made a video to share with you! The song in the video is called "Blessed One." It was always one of my favorites at my church in college. (Maybe you sing it at your parish, too?) This particular recording is from the CD my choir recorded in 2009. I hope you will enjoy it.

{click here to view in a separate window}

Isn't the refrain beautiful? I especially love the harmonies (always wish I was a tenor for this song!). The melodies are simple, yet so lovely - which is fitting for our Blessed Mother, I think.

To finish my series of posts on Mary, I am hosting a Marian linkup beginning today. (It's my blog's first linkup! Exciting!) It will be open through May 31, the Feast of the Visitation and the Queenship of Mary. I invite you to share any of your posts on Mary (new or old, and you may share more than one if you like). My hope is that as we share these posts we will also be able to encourage one another and grow with one another in faith as we honor the mother of Jesus.
To join me: Click the "Add your link" button below. Be sure to enter the URL of your specific Marian post, not just your blog homepage. If you're writing a new post, please include a link back to this post to encourage others to join us. Feel free to include the Full of Grace linkup graphic in your post, too!

Thanks so much for linking up with me - I look forward to reading your posts!

Answer Me This & St. Gianna Novena {Day 8}

Happy Sunday!

Kendra of Catholic All Year recently started a Sunday series called Answer Me This where she asks her readers a few questions, and then anyone can play along and answer. Fun, right?
Well, the delightful Miss Kendra herself tagged me last Sunday, and I'd love to join in - so here are my answers to this week's questions:

1. Do you hate happy clappy church music?
I suppose that would depend upon what one considers to be "happy clappy church music."

When I was going to school in Ann Arbor I served as the music director for the Newman Choir at St. Mary Student Parish for five years. This choir sang at the 7:00 p.m. Mass, and our repertoire often leaned towards/was contemporary. One may have even considered some of our selections "happy clappy." I'm sure of it, in fact. (It may be worth mentioning that for some reason I have a negative connotation with the adjectives "happy clappy." Maybe it's because the question asks me if I hate it, or maybe I'm just being overly sensitive and taking this question too seriously because I am passionate about church music. Probably the latter.)

To answer the question: If the music moves the congregation in prayer or in praise and has appropriate placement within the Mass, then no, I don't hate happy clappy church music. (Though I probably wouldn't describe that music as "happy clappy.") However, as soon as the music becomes a distraction or showy in any way, I think there's a problem. But music that enhances liturgy, inspires prayer and leads the congregation closer to our Lord - I can get behind that, clapping or no clapping.
Graduation Mass 2008
Disclaimer: Michael is very distressed that he is wearing jeans in this picture,
which is not his preferred Mass attire.
2. What is your priority: eating or sleeping?
Oh, tough question! I think I would have to say...hmm...eating. Though sleeping is definitely good, too!

3. What type of milk do you drink in your house?
Skim. And if we lived in a town that sold Prairie Farms dairy, that would be the brand because my father-in-law works for them. Family pride & loyalty! Though honestly, I can't remember the last time I poured myself a glass of milk to drink (must have been with a piece of cake or cookies!). This may or may not have something to do with the fact that when I was growing up, my sister and I had to have a glass of milk with dinner every.single.night. When we got a little older we could choose to have water instead - oh, that was a happy day!

4. What is a book that changed your perspective on something?
Life-Giving Love : Embracing God's Beautiful Design for Marriage by Kimberly Hahn opened my eyes and changed my perspective on living out God's design for marriage. It is truly beautiful.

5. Who is your favorite saint?
Though I am a cradle Catholic, I did not fully appreciate the blessing of the Communion of Saints until very recently. In the week of waiting when we weren't sure what was going to happen to our baby I would pray a litany of the saints or just call on all the saints I could think of to pray for us. As for my favorite saint...if you've been reading my blog this week, I bet you'll never guess. {wink.}

My favorite saint would probably have to be St. Gianna (though St. Michael the Archangel is a close second!). This is the eighth day of a novena I have been praying here on the blog along with my readers. Do you know her? If not, reading some of her quotations might be a great place to start.

6. Introvert or extrovert?
I don't think I'm completely one or the other, though if I absolutely had to pick one, I'd say introvert.

That was fun! Thank you, Kendra! Click on over to the linkup for more answers to these questions. I'd love to hear yours. :)

And, as I mentioned in question no. 5, today is the eighth day of our novena to ask St. Gianna Beretta Molla, patron saint of mothers, unborn children, and physicians, to pray for us. We'll finish the novena tomorrow, April 28 - St. Gianna's feast day! Whether you've been praying with us daily or you just stopped by today, I'd love for you to join us in prayer. And if you have any intentions you'd like to pray for, I invite you to share them in the comments.
Please pray with me:

God, our Father, You have granted to Your church the gift of Gianna Beretta Molla. In her youth she lovingly sought You and drew other young people to You, involving them, through apostolic witness and Catholic Action, in the care of the sick and aged, to help and comfort them.

We thank You for the gift of this young woman, so deeply committed to You. Through her example grant us the grace to consecrate our lives to Your service, for the joy of our brothers and sisters.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Jesus, Redeemer of mankind, You called Saint Gianna to exercise the medical profession as a mission for the comfort of bodies and souls. In her suffering fellow men and in the little ones, deprived of all support, she saw You.

We thank You for having revealed Yourself to this servant as “one who serves” and who soothes the sufferings of men. Treasuring her example may we become generous Christians at the service of our brothers and sisters, especially those with whom You deign to share Your Cross.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

God, Sanctifying Spirit, who love the Church as Your Bride, You poured into the heart of Saint Gianna a share of Your Love so that she could radiate it in her family, and thus cooperate with You in the wonderful plan of creation, and give life to new children who could know and love You.
We thank You for this model wife and, through her encouraging witness, we beg You to grant to our families the serene and Christian presence of mothers committed to transform their homes into cenacles of faith and love, rich with generous activity and sanctifying service.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O God, Creator and lover of mankind, You were close to Saint Gianna when, affected by illness, she was in the painful dilemma of choosing between her own life and the life of the child whom she was carrying in herself, a gift long-awaited. Trusting You alone, and aware of Your Commandment to respect human life, Gianna found the courage to do her duty as a mother and to say “yes” to the new life of her baby, generously sacrificing her own. Through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Jesus, and after the example of Gianna, inspire all mothers to welcome with love the sparkle of new life. Grant us the grace we are praying for {say your intentions} and the joy to find an inspiration in Saint Gianna who, as a model spouse and mother, after the example of Christ, gave up her life for the life of others.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

{novena source}
•     •     •

Please stop by again tomorrow to finish praying our novena, to celebrate the Feast of St. Gianna, and to learn a little something special about our sweet baby.

Wishing you a very blessed Divine Mercy Sunday...
Saint John Paul II, pray for us.
Saint John XXIII, pray for us.

7 quick takes {no. 12}

Linking up with Jen & friends at Conversion Diary for another round of 7 quick takes!

{1}
Did you treat yourself on Tuesday? I sure did! My treat for the day was a delicious chocolate chip walnut cookie from Levain Bakery. I gobbled my cookie up before thinking to take a picture, but here are a couple from the bakery's website:
{photo via}

{just look at that melty chocolate goodness inside...YUM! photo via}
It wouldn't surprise me if their cookies weighed a pound each! The pictures don't quite do them justice - they are HUGE. And so delicious. What a treat!

{2}
I hope you had a blessed start to your Lent on Ash Wednesday. I am just so thankful for this Lenten season we have entered. It is a true gift.
{my #ashtag picture}

{3}

This song by music artist Matt Maher (featuring Audrey Assad here) has been a good one for me to listen to as Lent begins. It's one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy.

{4}
I recently went with a friend to a tea shop in the Upper West Side called Alice's Tea Cup (that's Alice of Alice in Wonderland fame). It was such an adorable place for a quiet afternoon of good conversation. Just look how cute the tea cup is! And yes, that's a little bird on my tea pot, holding a tiny sponge under the tea spout to soak up any drips. A cute and cozy spot if you're ever in the neighborhood and would like a refreshing spot of tea!
{decaf herbal chai with milk & honey. delicious.}
{5}
It's been a challenging two weeks for me. My husband Michael has been in Bangladesh for his graduate research, and let me tell you - I have missed him! Since we are one in the sacrament of marriage, it's just so hard to be separated. But! Today he is coming HOME!! I am so happy and excited I can hardly stand myself. Life with him is just the best. I'm blessed & grateful.

{6}
In the meantime, I think I may make these cranberry orange scones for his return. (Did I mention food is one way to my husband's heart?) My mom started making these scones a few years ago, and now I love to make them, too. We make mini scones, so the recipe makes more (bake the small scones for ~8 minutes or until golden brown on top). They're a flavorful treat - great for breakfast or with a cup of tea or coffee. And, they freeze really well - just wrap individually in cling wrap & place in a freezer bag. De to the lish.

{7}
Well, I'm off to do some baking and tidying. Trying to keep busy as I count down the minutes to Michael's return!

Wishing you & yours a blessed weekend!

7 Quick Takes {no. 9} catching up

I can't believe it's been a week since I've posted here! It was one of those weeks where I was too busy living to be blogging, so let's catch up on what happened this week:

{1}
As I mentioned last week, my family came to visit! My parents, my grandpa, and his friend arrived last weekend and left yesterday. We had such a wonderful visit. Time together is precious, especially since we live so far away from them in this season of my life.

{2}
My family loves the arts, and when they visit NYC we usually attend a few performances.
This trip we were lucky enough to see two Broadway shows:
Matilda the Musical
and
The Bridges of Madison County.
They were two very different musicals, but I really enjoyed both performances.

{3}
We also got to see Rusalka at The Metropolitan Opera, starring Renée Fleming.
{Did you hear Ms. Fleming sing the National Anthem last Saturday?}
The opera was beautiful! In essence it is the operatic version of The Little Mermaid.
Did you know that The Met broadcasts live performances you can see in movie theaters across the country? The opera I saw, Rusalka, is going to be broadcasted tomorrow (Saturday 2/8)!
Click here to find out if it's playing near you!

{4}
In addition to filling up on music & the arts, we also filled up on food. Really good food.
We are never left wanting for more when my family comes to visit!
Isn't this pretty? We went to Blue Bottle Coffee in the meatpacking district of NYC.
{momma & me enjoying our lattes}
{5}
We spent one afternoon toodling around at some shops in the city.
We went to Chelsea Market for part of the day - full post on that coming soon!

{6}
My parents experienced a variety of temperatures & weather during their visit. Their first full day here it was over 50 degrees - so nice! The very next day it snowed 6-8 inches - not so nice.
{view from the Time Warner Center - looking onto Columbus Circle}
Good thing my family members are troopers because it was a slippery, slushy mess out there!
A second round of snow caused them to delay their return by a day for safer travels. It was nice for us to have an extra day to spend with them!

{7}
What a great trip! I was sad to see them go yesterday.
I feel so blessed to have such a wonderful family.

Looking forward to a relaxing and rejuvenating weekend...and catching up on all the blog posts I missed this week. Any you particularly enjoyed? Let me know!

7 Quick Takes {No. 6}

TGIF! What a week. What better way to kick off the weekend than some Friday night quick takes?

{1}
Actually, I kicked off my weekend with a date night with Michael. We just got back from our favorite Thai restaurant in the neighborhood. It's such a treat for us to go out for a date, and a blessing to have special time for the two of us. I just love date nights. Always have, and I think I always will.

{2}
This was my first full week back in a routine post-holidays. It kicked my butt a little, but I also came down with a cold...and we had some absolutely FRIGID weather this week...so that could have had something to do with it. I also decided on my word of the year for 2014:

{3}
Speaking of quiet...have you heard this song, "Winter Snow," by Audrey Assad? It's beautiful.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

{4}
I keep forgetting to mention my Saint of the Year, which I got via Jen's Patron Saint Generator.
{St. Anastasia of Sirmium}
I didn't know anything about her, but she is a patron saint for martyrs, weavers and widows.
Her feast day is December 25, and she is one of seven women (not counting Mary) commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass. Pretty cool!

{5}
My husband, Michael, got St. Thomas Aquinas.
As the patron saint of students, this is perfect for my husband, especially as he has a big semester coming up at school with his qualifying exams. Prayers appreciated for him!

Have you gotten your saint for 2014? Click here!

{6}
While we're on the topic of 2014, I still have a little wrapping up of 2013 to do. I wanted to link up to Haley's What I read in 2013 post, but I didn't quite get my act together in time. So! I'll share a few of my favorites in this take. I recommend:

  The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Kisses from Katie: A Story of Relentless Love and Redemption

Sarah's Key

Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust

Choosing to SEE: A Journey of Struggle and Hope

Those are a few of my favorites that I read in 2013!
When I was in junior high I owned a sweatshirt that looked something like this:
And I wore it proudly. Yep, I was that girl. Not ashamed! haha :)
What were your favorite 2013 reads? What's on your reading list for 2014?

{7}
Looking forward to a full weekend here in NYC. We will be taking down our Christmas decor and cleaning the apartment tomorrow, but then we have a double date planned with some dear friends. Sunday we are getting together with more friends, so it should be fun!

Hope you all have a great weekend, too! And click over to Jen's for more quick takes!
